In the context of carbon neutrality, hydrogen and electricity will become two dominant energy sources in the future. 2021 is the beginning year for the commercial development of hydrogen energy in China. The list of cities for the demonstration and extension of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be released soon, and the Outline of the National Hydrogen Energy Action Plan will also be issued. The hydrogen energy industry will be strongly promoted this year.

On June 1, the 2021 Pujiang Forum Global Tech-Matching Fair - Hydrogen Summit organized by the National Eastern Tech-Transfer Center and The Orange Group Research Institute was successfully held in Shanghai. At the summit, more than ten specials, cooperation forums and achievement release conferences were held, with focus on regional innovation, young talents, future sciences, emerging technologies, etc. The National Eastern Tech-Transfer Center is a state-level regional technology transfer platform jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, under the direction of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Committee, and the coordination of the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center.

A Hydrogen Energy Special was held at this summit, with the theme of hydrogen energy industry development in the context of carbon neutrality.


The summit gathered global leaders in the hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry, who gave speeches.

Xie Wenlan, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Committee, said that a hydrogen Energy Special added to this Summit for the first time. It was a grand meeting for all parties in the industry to discuss the development of China's hydrogen energy and fuel cell vehicle industry. The development of the hydrogen energy industry had become a global consensus. Currently, there was a good policy environment for the industry's development, creating the best opportunity for hydrogen energy development.

Academician Yi Baolian made a high-level summary of the development status and problems of the hydrogen energy and hydrogen fuel cell industry, and pointed out that the focus of future research would be greatly reducing costs of hydrogen fuel cell systems, hydrogen and hydrogen refueling stations, and improving the utilization Efficiency of catalysts, etc.

Dr. Liu Zhixiang, Deputy General Manager of Sinosynergy, delivered a speech entitled "Challenges in and Thoughts on the Promotion and Application of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Heavy Trucks" at the Hydrogen Energy Special. Liu Zhixiang said,


"Based on the sales data of domestic fuel cell vehicles in 2020, an average enterprise failed to sell one engine, indicating that a large number of fuel cell enterprises have not yet launched products and made profits.

Based on the prevailing domestic policies, the state is guiding enterprises to develop in the direction of long range, high and cold temperature conditions, and high cargo carrying capacity. This means that fuel cells vehicles need to solve the problem that the lithium battery vehicles cannot solve.

It is very difficult for fuel cell enterprises to compete with a fully market-oriented product, but on the state level, the development of fuel cell heavy trucks is an important direction. In 2020, China's reliance on foreign oil reached 73%. Taking into account long-term China-US relations, if there is no oil, making hydrogen from coal and using hydrogen to drive fuel cell heavy trucks is a feasible alternative.

The current national policy is shifting from vehicle subsidies to rewards in lieu of subsidies. Only if rewards and subsidies are fully used on the hydrogen price, and the final use cost is reduced, can the purchase of fuel cell vehicles be stimulated, and the fuel cell industry be truly market-oriented.

With the large-scale development of fuel cell vehicles and the increase of the demand for hydrogen, liquid hydrogen technology is a technical path that has to be considered.

For the extended application of FCV, economy is the most important factor, and it is inappropriate to define a "skin color" for hydrogen. Combining hydrogen production by coal restructuring with liquid hydrogen is a technical direction that can be considered in the short to medium term.

Therefore, the government should look closer, enterprises should look farther, investors should be patient, and technology providers should be stricter.”

Based on the development of the domestic hydrogen energy industry, Sinosynergy has chosen the development route of commercial vehicles since its establishment. In the past six years, Sinosynergy's R&D team has continuously surpassed itself and realized the continuous upgrading of core materials. Mass-produced flexible graphite bipolar plates has changed from 2.2mm to 1.66mm, and the volumetric power density of stacks has risen from 2.52kW/L to 3.8kW/L for the SynStack G stack, greatly promoting the large-scale production and independence of domestic fuel cell products.

Through the speeches and exchanges of industry leaders, the summit provided ideas and insights from more perspectives for the development of the hydrogen energy industry in the context of carbon neutrality.
